Philosophy
ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Unified School District is a multilingual district. It is committed to a strong academic curriculum for all students, including equal access to the core curriculum for English learners. The instructional program for English learners, in alignment with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Unified School District's Mission, consists of combinations of English language development (ELD), specially designed academic Instruction in English (SDAIE), primary language support, and instruction that reinforces a positive self-image and promotes cross-cultural understanding.
Program Goals
In the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Unified School District, all English learners are placed into age appropriate English language classrooms. The goal of the program for English learners is achievement of English fluency and academic success. All English learners receive a program of English Language Development (ELD) and specially designed academic instruction in English within the English language classroom setting. ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Unified School District addresses all learning needs of students in the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). However, the District Master Plan for English Learners establishes the following five goals to measure program success as it pertains to English learners:
| Goal | Description |
|---|---|
| Goal 1: Implementation |
EL Programs are fully implemented as detailed in the Master Plan for English Learners. |
| Goal 2: English Proficiency |
All English learners will make steady progress towards attainment of English proficiency as measured by the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC), or equivalent English language proficiency assessment. |
| Goal 3: Academic Progress |
All English learners, who have participated in our district English learner programs for five years, will have met grade-level standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics as measured by the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). All other English learners (those with less than 5 years within the district) will make steady progress towards meeting grade-level standards. |
| Goal 4: Parent Involvement |
Parents/guardians of English learners and students classified as initially fluent English proficient (IFEP) or reclassified fluent English proficient (RFEP) will participate meaningfully in their child’s education. |
| Goal 5: Post Graduate Preparedness |
The percentage of students who have ever been identified as English learners will increasingly meet the course requirements for UC/CSU entrance. |
Free Public Education Description
All children living in the United States of America are entitled to a free and public education for grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. Students are enrolled in their neighborhood school by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). While enrolled in public schools, students are to be instructed with grade level state adopted materials. Students who are learning English are to also receive appropriate English language development instruction until being reclassified as fluent English proficient (RFEP). It is critical that your child attend school regularly. During the student’s school career, he/she will receive report cards for each grading interval to inform the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the student’s progress.
