Biliteracy Seal & Pathway Awards
What is the Seal of Biliteracy?
The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, district, or state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.
The creation of the Seal of Biliteracy was motivated by many purposes, including:
- To encourage students to study world languages
- To certify the attainment of biliteracy skills for employers and colleges
- To communicate the value of language diversity
- To prepare students with 21st Century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society
- To strengthen intergroup relationships and honor the multiple cultures and languages in a community.
Since 2012, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Unified School District has joined the celebration of recognizing and honoring the multi-literacy skills of our students by promoting the Seal of Biliteracy and the Pathway Awards.
What are the Pathway Awards?
The Pathway Awards are available to 5th and 8th-grade students. This recognition is based on proficiency and is awarded to students who meet specific proficiency criteria in English and one or more languages in addition to English. This recognition is aligned with the State Seal of Biliteracy requirements and is an indication that if a student continues on this path in high school, they will be prepared to meet the requirements to earn the State Seal of Biliteracy.
Submit the application and the reading logs to your child’s school office. The parents and the students will be notified of when the writing assessment will be administered by the school site.
